How does the malnutrition affect children?

Malnutrition severely affects a child’s physical growth and development. It can lead to stunted growth (being too short for age), wasting (being too thin for height), and being underweight. Children who are malnourished often have weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections like diarrhea, pneumonia, and measles. In severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening conditions like marasmus and kwashiorkor. Proper nutrition is essential for brain development, especially in the early years. Malnourished children may experience delayed cognitive development, poor concentration, and learning difficulties. This affects their performance in school and reduces their future opportunities. Long-term malnutrition can also result in reduced intellectual ability and emotional problems.

Children who suffer from malnutrition often miss school due to illness, which can lead to lower educational attainment. As adults, they may have lower productivity and earning potential, continuing the cycle of poverty. Malnutrition also places a heavy burden on families and healthcare systems, especially in low-income communities, impacting overall national development.

This article highlights an important issue that doesn’t get enough attention. Malnutrition affects not just health, but also education and economic productivity. Glad to see it being discussed.

Thanks for shedding light on this. It’s important that governments and NGOs work hand in hand to tackle both undernutrition and overnutrition.
